When you enter the basic Standards & Training for Corrections (STC) academy you are employed as a Correctional Deputy Trainee. You will receive pay and benefits during your academy training.


The training academy is approximately 9 weeks long and the course includes:

  • Hostage management
  • Interview and interrogation
  • Baton techniques, carotid restraint, chemical agents, & less-lethal munitions
  • Emergency response training, first aid & CPR certification
  • Defensive tactics
  • Drill & ceremony
  • Physical exercise
  • Upon successful completion of the academy you are assigned to one of our correctional facilities to work 12-hour shifts including weekends and holidays.

After one year, a Correctional Deputy I may be evaluated for possible promotion to the classification of Correctional Deputy II. The probationary period for Correctional Deputy I/II is a total of 18 months from the date of hire.


In addition to the exciting and challenging career opportunity as a Correctional Deputy I, the County of Riverside participates in the Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) and offers an excellent retirement program. A flex benefit in the amount of $712 is provided for medical/dental/vision insurance.

  • A 2.5% premium pay benefit for completion of a Bachelor's degree
  • An additional 2.5% premium pay benefit for completion of a Master's degree from an accredited institution.

Eligible to work in U.S.
Ability to obtain California Driver License
U.S. high school diploma or G.E.D., or equivalent
